Social action theory is a micro and bottom-up approach that focuses on actions and interactions of individuals. It views that individuals have free will and choice, which is known as voluntaristic. But some argue there is a society with a set of rules, which are created and changed by peoples interpretation of symbols and actions. However other macro perspectives like Functionalism and Marxism will take a different approach.
Max Weber who argues both structural and action approaches is necessary to understand human behaviour. For example religion is the structural cause of capitalism, as work was originally interpreted as having a religious meaning for instance Calvinism promoted work ethic.
