Prior to beginning the exercise, I assumed, because I am from the same region as Joe, that I would find him relatively easy to understand, and on first listening to the piece this proved to be the case. As a result of this, I felt that I could move quite quickly towards listening for more detail. When I did this, I was quite surprised to discover how much of the conversation had not registered with me. For example, I did not pick up on Joes vivid description of the miners resembling The Zulus until the third time I listened to the piece. This had quite a strong personal effect on me because I am from an area in the North East of England which is rich in mining heritage. I also found it interesting that when saying certain words, such as Stoke, Joes accent had lost its North Eastern twang.
