Mary Ainsworth and William Corsaro have both produced pieces of research about the formation of children’s relationships. In this essay I will explore how children’s relationships develop on the basis of their mother’s responsiveness when compared to how the children interact with one another.
I will consider the strengths and weaknesses of both these pieces of research and evaluate the results.
There is much evidence to show that children’s relationships are determined by their mothers’ responsiveness. Mary Ainsworth, a member of John Bowlby’s research group, at first, was unconvinced that his findings on parent-child relationships were ecologically valid. ‘It seemed obvious to herĀ that a baby loves his mother because she satisfies his needs.’ (Ainsworth, personal communication in Bretherton, 1992; cited in Custance 2012).
