The film Crash

Paper instructions:
Race, Class, Gender, and Sexuality in the film Crash
Intersectionality encompasses how one’s complex mix of identities influence
the way an individual participates in, and is affected by society. The term refers to the idea that a person’s experiences are influenced by a multitude of factors, such as race, gender, sexuality, social class, etc. These categories can intersect or interact in ways that can either advantage or disadvantage the person’s well-being and development. Using this rationale, intersectionality as an analytic tool can be used to study, understand, and respond to the ways in which these factors do intersect and can expose different types of discrimination, disadvantage, and privilege portrayed in the movie Crash. With its intensified sense of morally charged conflict among characters of different backgrounds, Crash is, at it’s foundation, a cross-examination of racial attitudes, stereotypes, categorizing, and careless (and sometimes out of control) behaviors.

Please write a 2-3 page paper focusing on one of the main relationships or characters in Crash. I understand that you may need to do a certain amount of plot summarizing; however, this should not make up the bulk of your paper. Your paper should be a critical reflection on intersectionality in terms of how it was presented in the film.

Here are a few questions that you can use to guide your writing: How does the character interact with those who are different? How do others respond to the character? Is this character privileged or disadvantaged? Why or why not? Is the character a “good” person? If so, why do you think so? If the character is a “bad” person, is there anything redeeming about him/her? At what point did you notice a change? Please explain how the character’s identities influence his/her actions in the film. In other words, discuss what attributes (Race, Class, Gender, Sexuality) may be a motivating factor for why he/she responds a certain way.
Please remember to cite all sources. If you are suspected of plagiarizing any part of this assignment, you will be called in for a conference to discuss further action. PLEASE PROOFREAD your paper. You will be graded as follows:

1. Content (60 points): Does the essay reflect a basic understanding of intersectionality? Does it reflect a basic understanding of the film? How do you substantiate your points? Do you make connections between theory and Crash and/or your lived experiences?

2. Structure/organization (20 points): Is the essay organized in a logical manner—do the ideas flow?

3. Grammatical Mechanics (20 points): Is the essay free from grammatical errors (misspelled words, subject-verb agreement)? Do sentences make sense? Please proofread your paper and/or read them aloud.
