read this first section of Genesis as if you had never
seen it before. We tend to think that we know the Genesis story,
without reading it very carefully. There is one very strange
part here that contradicts one of the basic tenets of modern
Christianity and modern Judaism. Do you see it? In these two excerpts you may see, as I do, some of
the similarities
between the creation story of the ancient Hebrews and the creation story
of the Mayas.
Here’s another hint: be careful if you discuss the creation of humans in the Popol Vuh. The creation of
humans is not necessarily as direct as in the Genesis story. Think about what these stories say, and
what they do not say.
There’s a fascinating section in the Popol Vuh about humans once having perfect knowledge, and then
being stripped of that knowledge. That’s another comparison you can make with the Book of Genesis, if
you wish.
