Research evaluation report- Communication and Media Research

Research evaluation report- Communication and Media Research

Choose the three options; Newspoll report, SNS study or mobile news study. You are free to choose any one of the three options regardless of your major or specialist degree. Once you select your choice, you must complete the assessment by reading the research report and reviewing the methodology. (I choose Newspoll report and I will provide news story and the accompanying tabled data in additional files)
The word counts need at least 1400 (I will provide full detail in additional files)
Keep in mind that the paper should not be a summary of the article but an analytical evaluation of the methodology. Incorrect observations or analyses will be marked down.
‘Newspoll’ newspaper report from The Australian

Use only this news story and the accompanying tabled data. Evaluate the news story and its conclusions from a methodological perspective. The main questions asked will be; how did the researchers collect data, what data did they collect, when did they collect data, why did they collect these data and not others? How do you evaluate their methodological approach? Your focus should be on the methodology, the analysis and what the story reports or does not report. Use only the news story as presented. You need no other information. No references required.
These questions are just a guide. You don’t have to use them as subheadings in your report. Your focus should be on the methodology, the analysis and what the study contains and does not contain
Main components of the report (I provide 7 lecture notes in additional files for you used)
What is the methodology & method?
o Validity of design : external, internal validity
o Advantages/disadvantages of method – data collection
what type of sampling?
o If probability : interpret sampling error, confidence interval
o If longitudinal : difference of proportion test
o If non probability : external validity?
how did they operationalise? Measure?
o Validity and reliability
oRandom vs. systematic error (bias)
In other words, you must include…
Overall assessment of research design – positivist/objectivist,
deductive approach
Random vs. non random sample and its meaning – external validity/generalization, etc,
IF RANDOM: sampling error/confidence interval and interpretation
IF LONGITUDINAL: difference of proportion test – linking it to the newspaper story or the journal article
Response rate – or lack of reporting it
Advantages/disadvantages of method (face to face, phone, online..)
Interview dates –When did they collect the data? Did they report
this?
Concepts and variables, what they measured, validity/reliability
Bias during data collection – wording, interviewer, context, etc
Reliability – rotate answers?
FAQ
This is not an ‘essay’ assignment. You must evaluate the correct
or incorrect use of the methodology – so there are right or
wrong ‘answers’.
It should not be a summary of the article but an analytical
evaluation of the methodology.
You must apply the concepts we learned in class from Weeks 1
to 7. However, you do not need to reference anything. There is
NO need to look up additional information – only the article you
have chosen, your class notes, lecture/tutorial information, and
the textbook.
No need to use the headings provided in the unit outline.
No need to follow a particular structure – such as having
subheadings. It is entirely your choice.
The only statistics you need to know is the sampling error,
confidence interval, and difference of proportion test. You don’t
have to understand or comment on any other statistical
information that might appear in the articles (i.e. t-test,
regression, etc).
