You will be keeping journal entries about your research process. You will write detailed entries about eight of your sources, five of which must be scholarly, with the remainder substantive/primary. In addition, you will keep a growing works consulted, which must include at least seven additional sources. This way you don’t have to thoroughly analyze sources that seem less useful. Pick your eight strongest sources, so that you have information about them readily available when you craft your own arguments in Unit 3.
Each of the eight detailed entries should include:
Citation: Write the correct MLA citation for the source.
Summary: Write a fairly extensive summary of the article. Identify its main claim or main point. Identify also its supporting points. Carefully document the evidence that your author uses to support his or her claim. Remember to use quotation marks and cite page numbers when you use language that is not your own. Remember too that a summary does not include your ideas or evaluation.
Key Quotations: Identify brief key passages that you might want to quote in your essay. Copy them exactly. Cite the page or paragraph numbers appropriately. “Unpack” the material, and comment on it carefully.
Evaluation: Having done the above, evaluate the usefulness of this source for you. Don’t talk about how you will use the source; you probably can’t know that yet. Instead consider how this work affects your thinking about your research and your research question. Consider too any particular strengths and weaknesses of the source. Does it use credible support for its claims? Are you starting to understand something better or more clearly by having read this source?
In addition to these eight detailed entries, provide the citation for seven additional sources.
Look for the network. Keep an eye out for how each source might expand your research. Does the author respond to any main scholars that you could investigate?
Keep thinking about your Research Question. Remember that it can (and in many cases should) evolve as you read more. Keep evaluating how sources influence your inquiry.
There is no magic length to the full entry, but you must be thoughtful and detailed. It would seem, though, that anything less than 250 words may miss something important, either in the “They Say” or “I Say” portion. However, it is important to be precise enough to focus on the relevant information rather than trying to restate everything the source said.
