OL 215: Decision-Making Analysis Guidelines and Rubric

Overview
What are the fundamental principles of decision-making and management? And how are they applicable in real-world settings? The final project for this course seeks to answer these questions through a detailed analysis of a specific leader and company.

Prompt
The focus of this analysis involves analyzing key aspects of decision-making and management in a specific company through the lens of a key decision-making stakeholder: the leader. For purposes of this project, you must select a pair: a specific manager or leader and an organization that the leader or manager has been associated with either in the past or currently. You will analyze this leader’s management and leadership style, applying elements of the P-O-L-C decision-making framework. While you will select your choice of influential manager or leader to write about, it must be in the context of his or her decision making within a particular organization or institution to be relevant in applying the instructions for this project. At the conclusion of your analysis, you will address how this example can inform other real-world decision making in other organizations as well as your own decision-making and management skills.

The project is divided into two milestones and a final product, which will be submitted at various points throughout the course to scaffold learning and ensure quality final submissions. Your completed analysis paper must address each aspect of the critical elements listed below.

Critical Elements
Specifically, the following critical elements must be addressed in your completed paper:

1. Background
a. Leader Background and Credentials: What are the selected leader’s background and credentials? This is where you would discuss key biographical data, education, training, employment, and so forth. For example, if there is something significant in the leader’s background (family history, economic challenges, etc.), you would want to include it to provide insight on your analysis.
b. Leader Decision-Making Style: Describe your leader’s typical decision-making style. What situations or anecdotes support your observations?
c. Connection to Fundamental Management Principles: How are aspects of the leader’s decision-making style that you have observed connected to fundamental management principles? For example, this is where you might discuss how the leader relies on aspects of the planning stage of P-O-L-C.

2. Company Policies and Practices
a. Aspects of Company Policies and Practices: What aspects of the company’s management policies and practices have shaped the organizational framework? This is where you should describe key policies and practices in the organization’s framework related to planning, organizing, leading, and controlling.
i. Planning: For example, this is where you would discuss an aspect of the company’s mission, vision, strategy, goals, or objectives connected with the planning stage. Did the company alter its mission statement to emphasize the stakeholders it serves?
ii. Organizing: For example, this is where you would discuss the climate of the organization, its design, culture, social networks, and similar aspects. Be sure to include how the leader’s role in orchestrating these elements shaped the organization.
iii. Leading: For example, this is where you describe the leadership style, which includes decision making and communication within the organization. How have the leader’s decisions shaped such things as motivation? Work ethics? Is communication open and encouraged? How have these leadership decisions shaped the company? Interpret the outcomes of a decision made—is it related directly to the leader’s style? If delivered from a different point of view, would the results be different?
iv. Controlling: For example, this is where you discuss how the leader’s process, structures, and human resources put into place are shaping the organization. Are the systems effective? What processes have been put into place and why, with what result?

3. Aspects of Organizational Culture: What aspects of the organizational culture have resulted from the leader’s decisions and values? Use examples to illustrate these connections. Contrast these examples with examples of the organizational culture that are influenced by other factors that may or may not be beyond the leader’s control to provide additional insight into this culture.

4. Systems and Processes
a. Success: What initiatives or strategies implemented by this leader have been successful? What aspects led to these successes?
b. Failure: What initiatives or strategies implemented by this leader have been less than successful? What aspects led to these failures?

5. Applicability of Leadership Style: How are aspects of this leader’s style applicable to other organizations?

6. Application of Leadership Style: What are key takeaways that can be applied in your own personal or professional real-world settings? Provide concrete or hypothetical examples (if you are not in an applicable field) that support your conclusions.
