How do time, incident, memory, and experience all intertwine to produce your own sense of identity? To what extent can a person

maintain an identity in an ever-changing world? How are identities formed and re-formed? Consider the events and experiences that

shaped Elaine Risley’s identity as she developed from a child into an adult, and compare that with your own during a similar time

period. Reflect on the nature of identity itself and consider how both you and Elaine are responsible for the creation of a unique

identity.
In this key question, you are to write a personal essay that considers both the life of Elaine Risley and your own experience. You do

not have to develop your ideas in a strictly logical fashion (for example, Elaine in grade 7; you in grade 7; Elaine in grade 9; you in

grade 9; and so on). Instead, you can develop patterns and insights, or outline similar and different experiences, as you see fit. The

idea is to come to a better understanding of Elaine’s identity and your own.
Use specific examples from the novel and from your own experience to draw parallels and/ore contrasts between Elaine’s adaptation and

growth, and your own. Try to be perceptive in outlining similarities and differences. Try, also, to engage and move the reader by using

language, sentence structure, and rhetorical devices effectively.
Your essay should be reflective about the nature of identity itself, and it should consider how both you and Elaine are responsible for

the creation of a unique identity. Your essay will be evaluated based on your perceptiveness its ability to engage and move the reader,

the quality of evidence/anecdotes provided, and the quality of the writing.
