To avoid misconceptions, it is important to distinguish homosexuality from the queer subculture. Halperin recounts similar feelings from a man named John, in his book- How to be Gay. John states that while talking about homosexuality is admirable and a step in the right direction in terms of tolerance; being gay is a sexual orientation and not a sub culture. Reiterating that, the longer discussion skews toward cliches and stereotyping, the longer the image of homosexuality is skewed to the people who learn about it.
