Explain how Raymond Williams challenged traditional definitions of culture.

In this essay I will begin to explain how it was Raymond Williams challenged traditional definitions of culture. I will be looking at the works of Matthew Arnold and F.R. Leavis, to gain some understanding of what is considered a traditional definition of culture. For Arnold I will be looking at one of his most notable works Culture and Anarchy; and for Leavis I will be looking at The Great Tradition I will look at the historical context of when those definitions were made to develop an understanding of why they were presented in such a way. I will then outline Raymond Williams ideas on culture by looking at his upbringing and displaying his published essays and books; namely Culture and Society, Keywords and Culture is Ordinary.
