For this assignment, write an analysis of one of the following articles:
ìWhy Should We Give a Bleep about Profanity?î by Neil Macdonald:
http://www.cbc.ca/news/world/profanity-neil-macdonald-1.3406290
Your essay should be double spaced, in 12-point font and 2.5 – 3 pages (or 625 – 750 words). Consider what the author is arguing and how s/he is making her/his claim. In performing your analysis, note what strikes you as interesting, strange, significant or revealing (see Writing Analytically Chapter 3). Also look for patterns in the text: repetitions, binaries, anomalies (see Writing Analytically Chapter 1). Use your observation to make a claim and formulate a thesis statement about the textís meaning. Be sure to ask yourself ìso what?î about the observations you have highlighted. What does the text mean and how does the author support her/his claim(s)?
Warning: Avoid summarizing the plot, simply offering a list of observation or ideas from the text. You need to make claims and arguments about how the text produces meaning. Link the details/evidence you notice in the text to claims you are making about what the text is arguing and how it is arguing.
Keep in mind: Do not argue with the author or focus your paper on the topic in the article. The article itself is the subject of your analysis.
This assignment is NOT a research assignment. There is no need to use secondary sources.
You will be graded on the development and the plausibility of your analysis and interpretation of the text, the structure of your argument and your writing (spelling, grammar and style).
