What is the historical significance of Malcolm X?

Malcolm X (X) was one of the most controversial and overlooked leaders of the Civil Rights movement of 1954 until 1968. His impact is often debated however, to many he is remembered as a radical activist and outspoken public voice of the Black Muslim faith , challenging the status quo of civil rights movement and the nonviolent pursuit of integration championed by Martin Luther King Jr.  X acted as an empowering voice amongst the underprivileged areas of the United States, such as Harlem, promising to eradicate white aggression by any means necessary , a quote coined in a speech at a rally for Afro-American rights in 1964 that became Xs immortal catch phrase.
