The relationship between Russia and the Western states had always been centred around suspicion and fear, as each one believed that the other was out to destroy their governmental system. However during the Second World War, they had a relationship that was seemingly undisturbed by their previous quarrels and they were able to co-operate well. The four passages show a range of different facts and opinions that define the relationship of the West and the USSR ranging from overwhelming co-operation shown in interpretations B and D, to almost total disagreement shown in interpretation A and with interpretation C showing a mix of both.
