The physiological and performance effects of ‘warm-up’.

RELEVANT MODULE LEARNING OBJECTIVES
1. Describe the role of ATP in energy transfer and outline the anaerobic alactic, anaerobic lactic and aerobic energy systems for the re-synthesis of ATP.
2. Describe and explain the pattern of oxygen consumption during steady state exercise.
3. Describe and explain the pattern of oxygen uptake at the start [and after the finish] of exercise (‘on’ and ‘off’ kinetics)..
4. Discuss factors affecting metabolism.

Notes to student:

1. You should focus on the metabolic and physiological effects of warm-up and NOT on its possible role in injury prevention.
2. As a guideline you should cite a minimum of 10 references. There is no upper limit, but we would not expect more than 20. No more than 10% of your references should be world wide web, AND no more than a further 10% should be from text books. i.e. most should be from peer reviewed journals.
3. Make sure your references are up to date. Most should be from this century.
4. When searching Pubmed, Google Scholar or Web of Science for papers relating to ‘warm-up’ you may also like to use ‘prior exercise’ or ‘priming exercise’ in addition to other key words.
