Essay Prompt:
“Anyone can become angry—that is easy. But to be angry with the right person, to the right degree, at the right time, for the right
purpose, and in the right way—that is not easy.” Aristotle, The Nicomachean Ethics
Preliminary Questions:
You have learned Aristotle’s artist proofs of ethos, pathos, and logos. You have also read about the difference between emotional
intelligence and general intelligence. What connection do you see between Aristotle’s rhetorical strategies and both general and
emotional intelligence (or logos and ethos)? What could be the value in studying these fields?
Essay Question:
Daniel Goleman says that “if there are any two moral stances that our times call for, they are precisely these, self-restraint and
compassion” (xii). Do you agree with his claim that emotional intelligence has equal impact as general intelligence? Why or why
not?
Synthesis Criteria:
As you craft your own thesis about the usefulness of learning emotional intelligence (and work toward your final draft), please
incorporate the first two chapters of Goleman’s book, two additional Goleman chapters of your choice, and two other sources from
our class. You can integrate any outside experience or readings, but you must synthesize our class readings into your essay.
Be sure to shape your essays with ethos, pathos, and logos, to provide concrete and cited examples, and to map the structure of
your essay so there is one idea per paragraph. Each paragraph should support your central claim. Also, be mindful of Trimble’s
techniques as you write: Slow down to make sure your ideas are developed so they are concrete and easy to follow. Know your subject
and your audience! Also, please don’t summarize your paper in your conclusion; instead, leave the reader reflecting and provide a
possible solution.
