Making and remaking refers to activities people engage in and the relationships they have with other people and things (Blakeley and Staples, 2014, p. 22). This essay uses Smithdown Road in Liverpool to outline some examples of making and remaking on this street.
Smithdown road was well known for its craft trade including tailors, watchmakers, wrought iron workers and also leather smiths. In the 80s Smithdown road was affected by the Toxteth riots caused by poverty and tensions due to the multicultural communities in the area. In a way Smithdown road is similar to City road. In (The Open University, 2015) we learn about the different trades that City road was well known for including car sales showrooms.
