The purpose of this essay is to summarize and highlight the ways identity is addressed by social identity and social constructionism. This will be achieved by discussing how identity is understood in relation to key aspects such as every day social interactions and process of self-categorization, importance of social categories in relation to power and status and how these prepositions are supported by relevant study research.
Social Identity Theory central focus is on group rather than the individual; therefore identity formation is perceived as socially rather than individualistically constructed. According to SIT people possess natural drive to identify with particular social groups and separate from others.
