Identity is a psychological topic that involves people interacting with one another and their behaviour in everyday life. It has been studied by psychologists with different views, using various methods, data and, as a result, has produced different outcomes (Phoenix, 2007). This essay will describe Social Identity Theory (SIT) and Social Construction (SC) and will discuss the way they contrast with one another when addressing identity. Tajfel in SIT (cited in Phoenix, 2007) focuses on peoples need of belonging to social groups and identifying with the members, where prejudice is inevitable.
