In this essay Social Constructionism Theories will be discussed as a way to understand how these theories contribute in understanding the identities of people with physical disabilities. Unlike Psychosocial Theory and Social Identity Theory, Social Constructionism theories suggest that identities are constructed through everyday interactions, that is, through social relations. Language is seen as a powerful tool, and there is no one original theorist behind these theories.
The concept of identity refers to the set of perceptions, beliefs and feelings concerning ourselves. The cohesion between experiences, ideas, values and beliefs is guaranteed by the identity.
