Today we live in what is known as a Consumer Society. Social scientists study the way we live and they have discovered that the Consumer Society we live in is influenced by, not only what people make or do, but also by what they purchase and use. The growth of consumption however, has led to an ever increasing amount of rubbish. Rubbish is defined as something that is not wanted and has no value; Value being a complex term that refers to how the extent of which something is worthwhile or useful. (Brown, 2009, p.105)This essay looks at how rubbish is deemed to be not worthless to some people. It shows that the ever growing amount of consumption we do is linked to the rubbish we create and how this rubbish may be worthless to one, but can be a source of income for another.
