Many iconic developmental psychologists have, for decades researched the ability of infants, in their first 18 months of life, to perceive both visual and audio senses. Currently, its known that Infants are born with a rudimentary architecture of the nervous system and its sensory pathways that rapidly develop from birth and continues to develop over many years (Slater and Oates, 2006). To date, the only way developmental psychologists have been able to assess this development of the senses and perception has been through careful experimentation and assumption (Slater and Oates, 2006). Through exploration of the nativist and empiricist views, this text compares the early and modern research methods and the understanding such studies have contributed to our current knowledge of visual and audio perception.
