Overview: For your essay, you will take a position FOR or AGAINST an issue regarding Native American studies and write to convince
the reader to believe or do something. In order to convince the reader you need more than opinion; you need facts or examples to
back your opinion.
You will collect information central to the argument that you are examining—the claims, the evidence, and the assumptions—and argue
for the position that you think is true (thesis statement).
Purpose: In this essay, you will use evidence to support your claims. The claim is your interpretation of a situation or event or
your opinion. By using and analyzing quotes from academic scholars and experts who agree with your position, your argument will be
strengthened.
An analysis of the evidence falls into three categories: rational appeal, emotional appeal, ethical appeal.
Here are some possible themes relating to tribes: religion, marital dynamics, treatment of children, hunting strategies,
environment, results of colonization, modern day life.
You can take these ideas, do further research, and come up with a pro/con argument.
