Latino Pop Culture

Use the following prompt as a springboard to develop your own argument and analysis. The essay should present a concrete, manageable argument followed with close readings and analysis that will substantiate and develop fully your thesis. To this end, you should absolutely be sure to employ the appropriate theoretical tools offered in (The Book) Latinos and Narrative Media, Your Brain on Latino Comics. When analyzing your chosen Latino pop cultural object, please be sure to discuss how they use respective techniques to give shape to content that may or may not make new (vitally engage and possibly overturn) expectations of race, ethnicity, class, gender, sexuality.

In the years that I have taught Latino pop cultural phenomena I noticed that students tend to describe sights and sounds instead of using the tools respective to break down and analyze carefully how the respective cultural object is constructed and given shape. The tools we’ve acquired from our secondary readings and in-class discussions will help you write analytical papers and avoid the pitfalls of writing descriptive-only papers.
1. Pick a couple of the cartoons we have discussed in class and analyze how they work effectively or not in giving shape narratives that complicate and overturn simplistic formulations of the Latino-ness, or Latinidad. You might, for instance, compare and contrast Speedy cartoons with Adam de la Peña’s Minoriteam, Maya and Miguel with El Tigre, Handy Many with Dora. . .
