(what does Mr Kings need?) • Maximize the spaces to accommodate both the art studio and living area.
• Two concealed beds are required.
• Access to the tools and apparatuses easily and in an organized manner.
• Need a side door in the studio to exit to the parking space.
• Sufficient natural light, artificial and tasking lighting (with the correct type of ‘natural light’ bulbs) in the studio.
• A personal gallery along the hallway installed with artificial lighting and no window. • Due to the limited floor area, it is necessary to utilize every inch of the house. Design multifunctional rooms can make the best use of space.
• To accommodate guests who stay overnight.
• Flexible storage units that can keep tools in a well-organized manner is a must for safety concerns.
• Provide convenience for client to move large canvas and sculptures to the outdoor.
• Client prefers to work during daytime since natural sunlight can save energy. Artificial and tasking lighting allows him to work at night.
• Hallway provides plenty of wall surface for art exhibition. No window is to avoid ultraviolet light distorts the color pigment of the paintings.
Form & Color
(what does it looks like? Theme and style) • Design theme base on ‘Simplicity’.
• Furniture and decorations in clean and simple geometric shapes.
• High ceiling and large spans of windows.
• Contemporary style metal roof features with slope, clean lines, ranges of colors is visually in harmony with neighboring houses.
• Color schemes for the interior design must use neutral colors (preferable colors: white, tan, black beige). • Client wants to achieve the sense of simplicity which fit to his lifestyle.
• Client loves simple geometric shapes and hard-edge furniture.
• Improve visual openness of the interior and accentuate simple and clean lines for contemporary design.
• The structure of the residence, the outfitting and the layout reflect an artist’s lifestyle.
• Client decides to base on the realm of neutrality and avoid colorful wallpapers or bold colour decorations.
Performance (how to ensure it functions well?) • Two concealed beds can transform to provide other functions and save spaces.
• Two large sinks are installed in the toilet.
• Large side door near to the parking space.
• Metal roof with sloping design is durable, maintenance free, energy efficient, cost effective and also accommodate good rainwater drainage. • The 2 concealed beds can save spaces and transform to desk (for graphic design work) and bookshelf. One concealed bed can be flipped up and transformed to a desk. Another concealed bed can be transformed into a bookshelf.
• The toilet located close to the studio equipped 2 large sinks also function as wet station for client to wash tools and art accessories.
• Large entrance can be opened wide enough for client to move his sculptures and large canvas to his car in the shortest distance and less effort.
• During hot days, metal roof reflects heat and use less air con. During wet season, it allows rain water to be collected. Client has budget to work within.
Material (what does it made of?) • Building materials must be durable, easy maintenance and cost effective.
• Use of large solar insulated glass for windows and side door.
• Windows frames should be durable and fit into contemporary style of the house.
• Flooring material should be cleanable, durable and low maintenance.
• Roof needs to be cost effective, long life span, maintenance free and energy efficient.
• Sofa materials need to be cleanable, comfortable, cost effective and with variety choice of colors. • Moisture tolerant and cleanable material are suitable for artist and client has budget to work within.
• Reduce to amount of heat reaching the interior during hottest days and create translucent effect.
• Frames that are low or no maintenance, non-expensive, offer ranges of colors and with coating treatment to prevent rusting are preferred.
• Cleanable and replaceable flooring are more suitable for artist. In case of paints spill or scratches on the surface of the floor, the damaged part can be replaced by new tiles.
• Metal roof offers smooth and clean surface. It can withstand strong wind and last for 10 to 20 years. It also reflects solar heat and cut back the air con expenses.
• Covering material that can withstand wear and can be taken off for cleaning is the best choice. As well, materials that are too expensive and requires extra care are not preferred.
Representation (what graphical representations are needed for the client?) • Three concept design ideas
• Sketches of the residence studio including (2D floor plans, bubble diagrams, private & public drawings).
• Graphical presentations including (2D floor plans and 3D model with interior decorations and exterior structure design) • To have more choices of design ideas for final decision making.
• Conceptual presentation of all aspects of design are included.
• Simulate how the design looks in the real world and help the client view the design from different angles.
