Through clothing choices, the costume designer helps to express character and the world of the play,
creating outfits and a style that is “right” for each character and that works with the rest of the design
elements to create a unified whole. Working with each of your performers you will help to create an
appropriate “look” for each character for the presentation. Your secondary role is performer.
Individual Grade Checklist: (20 points)
8 points:
£ After the team has decided on an initial direction for the script, make a (PowerPoint) design
presentation to your team that includes 6 inspirational images with a written explanation for
each image. Images should be a combination of literal and figurative inspiration that will lead
to a formal costume design.
£ Submit your PowerPoint presentation to the Carmen dropbox according to the due date stated
on the production schedule.
12 points:
£ Submit to the Carmen dropbox a 500-word analysis that
o Explains your underlying design concept (also called “design idea”) for the play,
o Discusses your inspiration for the designs and how your research and team’s input
helped to solidify your ideas.
o Discusses how your choices help to illuminate the themes, characters, actions,
mood/tone, etc. of this dramatic world.
o Speaks to how you collaborated with actors to achieve the looks you wanted as a
designer. How did you solve design challenges?
