FAMILY ASSESSMENT MOVIE REVIEW INSTRUCTIONS
Purposes of the Assignment: to provide the opportunity for the student to integrate an understanding of family systems dynamics by analyzing a fictional family; to provide the student with an opportunity to review current research literature in the field of social work specifically in relation to family and systems dynamics; to provide the student with an opportunity to compare scientific research with the “popular” presentation of information about families in the media; to provide the student with an opportunity to present written information in a clear and logical manner.
This assignment specifically relates to competencies and practice behaviors below:

Use the following guidelines in completing the review:
1. Select one movie to review that portrays family members in relationship with each other and in transaction with their environments. Approved titles will be discussed in class.
2. Select a research article (published within the past 10 years) that studies an aspect of family life that relates in some way to the relationships in the movie that you viewed.
3. View the movie and write a description of your analysis of the family relationship dynamics viewed in the movie. Include discussion of the following: family rules(spoken & unspoken); triangles; boundaries; rituals; power; communication patterns and problem solving skills; family myths; family secrets; roles; family strengths; the family’s transactions with the environment and the manner in which these transactions seemingly influenced the family and the environment. Use quotes and scenes from the movie to support your analysis. USE THESE HEADINGS IN WRITING THE REVIEW.

So, is the experience your family exhibits similar to what research says you should expect to find? Support your assertions.
5. Include your critique of the manner in which the family dynamics were presented in the movie. Here, tell whether you found the movie realistic, biased and other descriptors of the movie. What were the strengths in the telling of this family’s story? What were the weaknesses? (Don’t forget this part!!!)
6. The review is to be typed, double spaced and the article and the movie should be listed in the bibliography along with the research article. Include a title page with your name, the title of your paper, the date, and the class for which the assignment is being submitted.
