The essay will review the different methods available for measuring autoantibodies; antiinsulin, antiGAD and IAA2 in relation to type 1 diabetes and then will conclude by evaluating the efficacy of the methodologies.
Type 1 diabetes (T1D) also known as insulin dependent diabetes mellitus is considered to have an autoimmune aetiology although evidence has not always been consistent. Type 1 diabetes is highly prevalent is most parts of the world, in the UK alone 18 to 20 per 100,000 (Divendra et al, 2004) individuals are affected. Recent epidemiological studies indicate type 1 diabetes is on the rise, in countries such Finland, the rate of incidence has nearly tripled since 1950s (Lutale et al, 2007). The rationale for dramatic increase remains an enigma, largely because the aetiology of the disease is still poorly understood.
