Assessment 1: Literature review
Weighting: 40%
Length: Around 1000-1500 words
The first assessment involves writing a literature review on offender decision-making processes and offender modus operandi on drug
importation. This assessment is designed to help you complete a review which will then assist you in further understanding
decision-making processes and complete crime script analysis for the last assessment for this subject.
Your review should cover three elements:
1- Rational choice and situational prevention
Relevance of the review in relation to the theoretical perspective (rational choice/situational prevention) and the angle it takes
to further understand crime. For this criterion, we expect you to present and discuss the theoretical perspective in your review.
How well can you present and use the theoretical perspective to focus on the ‘how’ crime is committed? (10%)
2- Script analysis
What is script analysis? How is this approach used for understanding crime? For this criterion, we expect you to present and
explain what script analysis is. (10%)
3- Previous empirical literature
Pertinence of the review in relation to drug importation. For this criterion, we expect you to present and discuss previous
empirical research on how drug importation is committed. How well can we learn from this literature to understand how this form of
crime is committed? (10%)
THE OBJECTIVE OF THESE TWO PARTS IS TO INTEGRATE THE THEORETICAL FRAMEWORK WITH PREVIOUS EMPIRICAL RESEARCH.
4- Reliability and quality of sources used to complete the review – How well are academic sources used in the review? (5%)
5- Overall presentation – What is the quality of the presentation (including clarity of writing, grammar, punctuation,
spelling, APA style, etc.)? (5%)
