Overview Now that you have completed your analytical drama matrix, you should be in good shape to complete your analytical drama essay.
For an analytical essay, you want to look in depth at one element of a piece of literature, specifically characterization. You want to explore it from different sides and think about how it affects the play. For this essay, you will use the play that you chose for your Drama Matrix. For example, you may have selected “The Cuban Swimmer” so for this essay you will look at characterization in “The Cuban Swimmer.” In other words, you will be thinking about how the writer creates all of these characters.
There is no minimum word count but a good guideline for this essay is around 500 words.
Directions 1. Look over your Drama Matrix for what you wrote about characterization. This will help to guide your paper.
2. Outline an essay on characterization in the play that you have selected. A possible outline will look like this:
I. Thesis
II. Characterization of Character 1 (Key points about this character)
Textual evidence
III. Characterization of Character 2 (Key points about this character)
Textual evidence
IV. Characterization of Character 3 (Key points about this character)
Textual evidence
V. Conclusion

However, as I said, this is just a possible outline. You may decide to frame your paper more as a comparison of the different characters. You also may look at more or fewer characters in your paper.
3. Draft your essay, being sure to include an introduction, with a thesis, and conclusion and to cite any information that you gathered from outside sources. Every body paragraph (not the introduction and conclusion, necessarily) should contain textual evidence to prove your claims.
4. Format your essay to conform to APA style guidelines. Be sure to have a title page and a reference page.
5. Finalize your paper and edit your work.
