Director’s Guest Lecturer Programme – Report and Portfolio Guidelines

Extract from Course Outline

“Writing a Report on the Keynote Speaker topic supported by and based on a portfolio of relevant researched material. Students should prepare this portfolio as if they were preparing for their first management position in the assigned area; an aide memoire to guide them = 20%”.

The portfolio must be in the subject area of the topic group to which the student was assigned.

Portfolio “A collection of papers and other forms of evidence that learning has taken place”

  • Self-reflective.
  • Foster individual ownership of own learning.
  • Learning can best be demonstrated through an end product.

Steps in Development of Portfolio:

  1. Want to show how students can apply what they have learned.

Decide on management position. It must be specific within specialism of the Keynote       Speaker Group.

For example in Food and Beverage:

  • Food and Beverage Manager
  • Bar Manager
  • Restaurant Manager
  • Conference and Banqueting Manager
  • F and B Event Management

For example in Marketing:

  • Marketing Manager of Hotel or Group
  • Sales Manager of Hotel or Group
  • Public Relations Manager

The position chosen must be approved by Dr Smyth. Submit as soon as possible. Method to be announced.

  1. What can be included – journal articles, articles from industry and professional magazines, extracts from text books, videos, pictures, examples of products, activities etc.

  1. Confirmation of Learning

Report

  • Based on an analysis of the materials you have collected what have you learnt that you will apply in your new job.
  • Where relevant relate to  main themes developed by your Keynote Speaker.

  1. Work must be individual. Do it on your own. Because there are thirteen Portfolios being developed individually it is vital that students work on their own to avoid the risk of plagiarism.

  1. Due end of term. Dr Phillip Smyth available to discuss. Last group can submit up to end of examination period.

  1. Format and Submission. Each portfolio should comprise 10 carefully chosen items. The report and log should comprise a minimum of 1000 words and a maximum of 1500 words. Submission must be in hard copy. In proper report format. If there are elements of the submission that require an electronic device to view them properly they should be submitted online to Dr Smyth at phillip.j.smyth@nuigalway.ie.

The 10 chosen items should be referenced using Harvard style.  They should not be included in the portfolio. In the body of the report the extract from the item that you believe will be of use in your new position should be shown. If it is large extract it should be in an appendix in addition to being referenced. If it is electronic it should be sent to Dr Smyth by email and referred to in the report

  1. Sequence and approach

The purpose of the report is to explain why you picked each reference; how it will be of use to you in your new job.

Therefore the first step is to think about the job and what responsibilities and activities it may involve. Research will be required here.

A clear picture of the job will guide you in the items to put in your portfolio.

Explaining the portfolio item will allow you the opportunity to show that you understand the concept and how it will help in a practical setting.

The report will be sequenced as follow:

  1. A brief Introduction listing the main elements of the job chosen.
  2. Ten Portfolio Items with explanations
  • A brief Conclusion

It is important to realise that in each job there are multi-disciplinary activities. So for instance in Food and Beverage there could be elements of design, menu, marketing, HR, finance and others. That is why the initial understanding of the contents of the job is so important. So therefore an F and B Portfolio that only concentrated on restaurant design would not be acceptable.
