Written Exegesis
An exegesis is document that analyses and discusses a certain production (or text), in
this case photography.
In the instance because you will be describing, analysing and interpreting your own
work (your Portfolio) it will be the voice of the author, yourself as the photographer.
An exegesis by the author may describe and document the development of ideas
before, during and after a production including:
• The initial ideas that determined the path of the projects original concept.
• The development of those ideas and further ideas that occurred during
production
• Realisations and maturation of concepts upon audience reception and critical
review.
A photographic exegesis will usually focus on explanation and analysis of:
• Visual representations
• Implied or explicit narratives
• Visual coding and references
• Thematic ideas
• Exploration of technique and reasoning
• The work in relation to relevant critical texts
Your tutor will discuss these ideas with you further in class
You will need to research texts and images related to the ideas that you are pursuing.
You need to discuss your work in relation to important critical writings relevant to your
chosen field of study.
This written work is your first foray into arts based research and writing. It is a formal
exercise that treats your photographic work as part of a research effort that includes a
written critical analysis.
