The essay should be a comparative essay review between “Gregory- Why isn’t the whole world developed” and “Richard- Why isn’t the whole world developed”

It will consist of 3 parts:

1. First, a brief summary or precis of the articles, including points of agreement and disagreement.

2. Second, an analysis of the source of the disagreement. To help you do this note that one way to categorize the reasons for disagreements is to divide them into 3 types:

1) Differences in Assumptions — Every author starts with certain assumptions or preconditions that shape the way we think. In addition, because no article can contain everything, one of the first assumptions or preconception is of what sort of information is relevant and what the important questions are. It is not uncommon for authors who disagree to be asking different questions without always recognizing this difference.
2) Differences in Evidence — Authors may use different kinds of evidence or different sources for data or a different selection from the same data source. Sometimes later authors will try to correct data used by previous authors. Or an author may use a different technique to extract evidence.

3) Differences in Interpretation — The significance of evidence is never self-evident; rather it depends on the chain of assumptions and arguments that have been and the criteria that are used in judgement. (If the evidence speaks for itself, there is a ventriloquist in the room)

Obviously, these categories are not completely independent since differences in evidence chosen might arise from different assumptions about what is important and so on. Also not every pair of articles will have differences in all three categories. Students should be careful to try to separate what are assumptions and what is evidence and what are conclusions as well.

3. Third, there should be a brief judgment as to the relative merits of the two articles
