Using Research Designs
The first step in finding answers is to create a blueprint to begin your work. The blueprint is your research design. The purpose of the research for evaluation you intend to conduct drives the type of design you select. Chapter 2 attached describes several Designs for Description, including time series, cross-sectional designs, and longitudinal designs. These designs are best used when you wish to describe a current situation. For example, you may wish to know how many robberies were committed in a particular town during heat waves.
Another purpose for research goes beyond description to inference. The purpose might be to infer a causal relationship. For example, you might want to know if hot weather actually causes higher crime rates. In this case, you would use a Design for Explanation. Two common designs for explanation are experimental design and quasi-experimental design. Experimental designs occur in a controlled environment such as a laboratory. Quasi-experimental designs occur in natural settings, common in the public and nonprofit sectors. Chapter 3 attached explains both experimental and quasi-experimental designs.
Assignment:
1. Write an example of research used for evaluation for which a Design for Description would be appropriate.
2. Describe the specific Design for Description you selected and justify your selection. Then post an example of the research.
