the soul versus the brain
The assigned readings and film all comment on the issue of the soul versus the brain, or whether life is designed by a higher power or by chance happened by a “Big Bang” of material connections. While these texts share a number of common concerns, each author takes an individual perspective and position.
For this project, in a formal academic essay of 5-7 pages, construct an account of actor and historian Ben Stein’s documentary Expelled. You will address the author’s project and argument by completing focused research tasks to analyze how outside texts clarify, illustrate, extend, or complicate the arguments in the film.
Criteria
• Accurately describe the film’s project and
argument.
• Signal the topic and give a clear indication
of how the paper will proceed.
• Describe the relationship between at least
three sources we read in class, in addition to the
film, and show how each text connects with an
argument from the primary text.
• Analyze secondary text claims/evidence in order
to show how they illustrate, clarify, extend, or
complicate arguments found in the documentary.
• Address an academic audience unfamiliar with
the text and secondary sources, using an
effective structure that guides the reader
from one idea to the next.
• Present evidence that explains in detail how
these texts illustrate, clarify, extend, or
complicate the primary text’s arguments.
