In the discussion assignments, you should write about one or two things that strike you as being of particular interest in the primary source readings. When choosing what to write about, think about what in the reading strikes you as unusual or important? What about the reading seems to reveal something significant about the past?
The following primary source is a series of excerpts from H.L. Mencken’s newspaper reports on the Scopes "Monkey Trial." Mencken’s reports were carried in newspapers throughout the country and were something of a sensation at the time. You may note that Mencken takes a very condescending attitude towards the town of Dayton and the Fundamentalist position.In general, however, the idea is to write one or two paragraphs about what you thought was most interesting in the primary source readings.
