Project description
1. Read D.H. Lawrence’s short story on page 477, “The Horse Dealer’s Daughter.”

2. Discuss the nature of love in the story. You may want to answer the following questions: What does the story tell you about the nature of love in general? What does the story reveal about social class and love? What do you think will happen to Mabel and Jack in the future?

For this paper, remember: You need to have a thesis statement. You need to have supporting paragraphs of at least 5-7 sentences with evidence supporting your thesis, correctly formatted. You also need to have a strong introduction and conclusion. DO NOT use the first person in your paper. Your paper should NOT have 1. needless plot summary–assume your reader is familiar with the story already 2. any first person phrases such “I feel or I believe.” Your paper SHOULD have: 1. a strong thesis statement + thesis map 2. be free of grammatical errors 3. strong details 4. conform to MLA standards.

NOTE: This is very important when writing a literary paper. If you need more information about how to cite a work, the MLA manual can be found at any bookstore or library. I will only require you to cite only our book in this paper. You do not need any other outside sources besides our book.

Your paper should show an abundance of detail, and have a strong voice and clear topic, and after the first paragraph the reader should know what you will talk about.

The best essay will focus on something very specific, and not something that is “general.” This paper will be graded 40% Mechanics and 60% content. There should be NO comma splices, no run-on sentences, misspelled words, etc. It must be double-spaced, 12-point font, two page minimum.

Remember to include important quotes from the story (these will be your evidence and help you get a higher grade!) and format them properly, using MLA format. I suggest that you DO NOT surf the net or Google the story but if you do, make sure you properly document it. Compose your response offline, upload to the Blackboard site (under the SafeAssign icon) and submit it to me.Your response should be at least two pages in length. Try to compose paragraphs which are (7-10 sentences in length). Please do not summarize the plot. Do not write in first person (“I” “In my opinion” etc). Keep your essay objective.
