Architecture as Art in Great Cities

Purpose: Good researchers must know how to communicate their material effectively. To that
end, the final project consists of a research paper on any of the topics listed below. The elements
of the project consist of the following:

 a 10-page research paper
 an abstract for the paper
 Appropriate headings for each section
 a References list of seven to ten sources

Topics:   This quarter has been dedicated to the great cities and great structures.   The final paper
will focus on choosing two structures that are similar and appeal to you.   Those structures can be
any type of building, including skyscrapers, museums, auditoriums, aqueducts, shrines, churches,
cathedrals, opera houses, significant government buildings, as well as bridges, helicopters,
airplanes, ships, Ferris wheels (perhaps the Millennium or London Eye).   You are to dedicate a
third of the paper to one structure, a third to the other structure, and a third to a comparison of the
two.

Focus: As this course is dedicated to the hard sciences, the focus of the paper needs to be on
elements of your structure that deal with engineering, science, or business. Cultural or political
history, cultural identity, and religious or aesthetic (its beauty) significance are not the guiding
principle. Rather consider the structure in light of the following:

 The manner in which it was constructed which might include
o The materials used to build it
o Any innovations used to construct it
o The steps used in constructing it
o The time it took to construct it
o Its expense
o Its use of light (extremely important when considering cathedrals)
o Its purpose (e.g., nuclear submarines or cathedrals)
o Where specifically it was constructed
o Any problems that arose during its construction
o The importance of the natural elements such as earthquakes or tsunamis in its
construction

 Appropriate title, no title page
 Abstract, single-spaced, placed beneath title, before introduction
 Headings, probably approximately four
 Any appropriate font , 11 or 12 font
 Seven to ten references, References section
 Tables or figures approximately 1”x1” appropriately labeled, captioned and referenced.
