The adaptation of Shakespeare’s The Tempest
Final Research Paper Prompt and Checklist
For the final paper, choose one of the following topics and write a research paper in which you survey the many issues and details concerning your topic and develop an original argument around one of the main concerns that you have discovered in your research and reading:
1) Research and develop a paper on one of the many adaptations of Shakespeare’s The Tempest. Compare and contrast how this adaptation relates to Shakespeare’s “original” and discuss the significance of this particular adaptation. (Note: You may not write on one of the adaptations we have already studied, e.g. Césaire or Taymor.)
I Choose “Prospero‘s Books”, a film adaptation of ‘The Tempest’
With each of these topics, be sure to address some of the larger questions about the representation of tempests and storms that we have raised this quarter. In particular, try to think about the cultural and social character of tempests and storms: What is the relationship between literary and historical storms? Why are we interested in fictionalizing storms? What does this fictional interest in storms tell us about how storms and natural disasters function in our culture and in our history? What is the relationship between storms and the social order? Does your chosen tempest disrupt, maintain, and/or reinforce current systems of order? Does it work as a social leveler or, on the contrary, does it highlight pre-existing social inequities? Does is tell us something about social injustice and/or justice? How does it affect cultural norms of class, race, gender, and sexuality? What does it say about them?
All topics must receive formal approval in our in-class conferences, and you are responsible for notifying me of any change in your topic.
Be sure to consult and follow all of the guidelines listed below:
1) As with all of the papers we’ve been writing this quarter, the text of your research paper should include the three main elements of a critical essay: a central, overarching argument about your chosen topic; textual evidence that works to prove, support, and extend your argument; and a conclusion that avoids simply restating your introduction but evokes the significance and stakes of both your argument and the evidence that you discuss and present in your paper.
2) The body of your paper must be 8-10 pages long, i.e. at minimum 8 full pages.
3) General Paper Requirements: 12 point, Times New Roman font (or equivalent), double-spaced lines, standard 1-inch margins, page numbers (do not number the cover page), parenthetical citations. Extensive proofreading for correct grammar, spelling, and syntax is also essential.
