Self Awareness & Improving Impression formation

Self Awareness & Improving Impression formation

Part 1-
Growing in Self-Awareness:
1. Listen to others. Conveniently, others are constantly giving you the very feedback you need to increase self-awareness.
2. Increase your open self. Revealing yourself to others will help increase your self-awareness. As you talk about yourself, you may see connections that you had previously missed.
3. Seek information about yourself. Encourage people to reveal what they know about you. Use situations that arise every day to gain sell-information.
4. Dialogue with yourself. No one knows you better than you know yourself. Ask yourself self-awareness questions: What motivates me to act as I do?

Students will discuss how they can grow in self-awareness. They will explain each of these suggestions. Students will select one suggestion they could try this week. They will explain why they chose this suggestion and how they will go about completing it.
Instructions:
Provide a personal example of ethnocentrism. Our textbook lists four suggestions on how we can grow in self-awareness above. Briefly explain each of these suggestions. Select one suggestion you could try this week. Explain why you chose this suggestion and how you will go about completing it. Be sure your posts are substantive.

Part 2-
Increasing accuracy in impression formation
1. Analyze impressions-subject your perceptions to logical analysis, to critical thinking. There are three suggestions: Recognize your own role in perception (Your emotional and physiological state will influence the meaning you give to your perceptions), Avoid early conclusion (On the basis of your observations of behaviors, formulate hypotheses to test again additional information and evidence), Beware of the just world hypothesis (Many people believe that the world is just good things happen to good people).
2. Check perceptions-To reduce uncertainty and to ensure that your initial impressions are more accurate. The two parts of perception checking is Description/Interpretation, Clarification.
3. Reduce uncertainty-In every communication situation, there is some degree of ambiguity. Including: Observe (Observing another person while he or she is engaged in an active task), Construct situations (You can sometimes manipulate situations so as to observe the person in more specific and revealing contexts), Lurk (When you log on to an internet group and lurk, reading the exchanges between the other group members before saying anything yourself), Ask (Learn about a person through asking others), Interact (Interacting with the individual will of course give you considerable information).
4. Increase Cultural Sensitivity- Recognizing and being sensitive to cultural differences will help increase your accuracy in perception.

Students will discuss four ways they can increase accuracy in impression formation (pp. 39-42). Students will describe one situation where an impression was formed that was not accurate. They will select one (or more) of the suggestions listed for increasing accuracy in impression formation and explain how this would have helped them form a more accurate impression.

Instructions:
