As you have seen from even the early period of animation, it is a form that is constantly driven by technical innovation. Many of the charms of early cartoons are simply the novelty aspect of using the technology, as if it were magic. Technology has continued to drive animation in all of its 100 years as a filmed medium, through today it is usually in the service of a visual style or a production efficiency. This brings change to the perceived popular notion of animation, and as we look at cartoons from various decades we can notice their place in time via the technology in use and the artistic direction.

For this paper, you will pick an innovation (rotoscoping) that occurred that “changed” animation. It can be from any period of time. Discuss a film, or films, that were pivotal in the introduction of this innovation, whether technical or artistic, or both. Identify an example of what was lost or over-taken when this innovation took place, and provide your own insights and opinions by comparing, for example, an exemplary film from immediately before the change to the film that you have identified as bringing forth this change/innovation.
