Research and Statistics
A Police Chief is asked to design a study that evaluates the effectiveness of a domestic violence program. The next 18 cases of reported domestic violence are assigned to complete the domestic violence program. Charges are filed on the following 16 cases, but no treatment programs are mandated. The names of all 34 offenders are kept on a confidential record and are monitored over the next 6 months to see if there are any additional reports of domestic violence made against these individuals. The Chief has kept all of this data on file so that he could assess the effectiveness of the domestic violence program. He plans to do this by comparing the rates of repeat offending between the group who participated in the program and the group who did not. See table 1 for the data the Chief collected over the past six months for the individuals included in his study.
1. Comment on the conclusions that can be drawn about the effectiveness of the
domestic violence program when only a comparison is made between the two group
means.
2. State the level you would recommend setting alpha and give the reasons for your
recommendation.
3. Discuss the advantages of using a t-test to analyze the data.
4. State the conclusions that can be drawn about the effectiveness of the domestic
violence program using the p value of 0.22 when a t-test is conducted on this data.
5.Critique the design of the Chief’s study and offer suggestions that would improve his chances of successfully identifying a significant difference between these two groups when a difference truly exists.
