Paper Subject: Qualitative text analysis

The data consists of four interviews with construction project managers about their work. The transcripts have been anonymised to protect the identity of the company, interviewees and interviewers. In these transcripts “education” and “power” refer to types of construction project. PRINCE2 is the name of a formal project task management system.

The aim of the analysis is to understand what construction project managers’ work is like; how project managers describe their work.

The research questions for this section are:
1) What is a project manager’s job like, according to their accounts?
2) Who are project managers’ stakeholders?
3) How are project managers managed? Relatedly – How is their work controlled? (Or conversely: How autonomous are project managers?).

You may use the set of general categories provided (see below). You can add to or develop these, or you can inductively develop your own new set of categories.
Some potential categories for coding the interviews: Skills, Teamwork, Responsibilities, Supervision, Tasks, Stakeholders, Age, Gender.
we advise you to use Word for initial reading through and writing memos, and Excel for coding the data, and preparing the codebook. (We strongly advise you against attempting to use any dedicated qualitative data analysis software like Nvivo. It takes a long time to learn how to use these tools effectively; it is not necessary; and it is best to practise the techniques without using these tools.)

We recommend the “framework” approach (Ritchie and Spencer, 1994) for this assignment. You can combine it with “template analysis” (King 2004) which involves creating a codebook from a sub-set of the data that functions as a “template” for coding up the rest of the data.
