Read the following excerpt that shows how an author compares and contrasts ideas. The following will give you an idea of what you need to include in your own introductory paragraph. I have included the bibliographic information if you would like to read more of the book.

How does Taylor explain why his topic would be important or interesting to readers? Let’s call this the hook. Where did you find it? What is the line number?
Find and identify Taylor’s thesis—the point for which he is trying to argue. Note the line number and rephrase the thesis in your own words. This is called “paraphrasing.”
Where does Taylor give credit and explain the position with which he does not agree (sometimes called the counterpoint)? Note the line numbers. Paraphrase his thoughts in these lines.
Where do you find a reason Taylor gives to refute the counterpoint? Paraphrase it.
Where do you find a reason Taylor gives to support his own thesis? Paraphrase it.
