Should the US government use its taxing power to fund a new social program designed to increase the number of Americans who have access to affordable health care?

Write a paper in which you construct an argument explaining and defending your answer to the question you choose. In writing your paper, it is essential that you have a thesis, and that you

defend your thesis against at least one or two of the best objections to it that you can imagine. A good paper will demonstrate an understanding of the moral issues implicated by the question;

it will present a thoughtful and well-reasoned discussion of the issues; and it will be responsive to the moral arguments that can be made on both sides of the relevant debate. You should feel

Note 1: In preparing to write this paper, you should read Lewis Vaughn’s Writing Philosophy, Chapters 3 and 4. Those chapters contain some very useful advice about how to write an

“argumentative essay” of the kind that you are expected to write for this assignment.

are not required to do any outside research; and the thoughts that you express in your paper should be your own.
