You should talk about the managerial strategy that seems to be in use, the type of organization structure employed, the type of technology utilized, the type of environment in which it operates, the leadership style used and so on. Only after doing all this should you attempt to explain why the organization works well or does not work well.
In other words, this is not to be a case study or analysis in the sense of a business policy case – where a problem is identified, various alternatives to solve the problem are developed and evaluated, and a solution selected. In fact, the organization may have no major problems, but your analysis should tell you why – (i.e., “The structure is appropriate for the work force and the technology used in this organization.”) However, if your organization does have problems (as most do) your analysis should give you increased insight about what may be the causes of these problems, and give some indications of how these problems might be addressed.
It might be helpful to conceptualize your paper as having three main parts:
? First Part: One or two pages briefly describing the general nature of the organization you are dealing with (eg. organization name, product or service produced, your role in the organization, brief history of organization, etc.)
? Second Part: Application of concepts to organization (eg. managerial strategy, contextual variables, structural variables, organizational dynamics, etc.) (Main part of paper.)
? Third Part: One or two pages to tie together and utilize analysis in terms of explaining why the organization does or does not work well. You might also discuss situations where the theory does not seem to “work” (if any) and why. (For instance, you may find that contingency theory predicts that a certain type of managerial strategy is appropriate in your organization. Yet, when this managerial strategy was used in your company in what the theory suggests is an appropriate situation, it did not result in favourable results. You should discuss why this may be.)
Reference to additional research and/or conceptual material beyond that in the text, readings, and lectures is neither required nor expected. Your paper must be typed, double-spaced and well organized and written. Subheadings must be used. Be sure to include a table of contents. Grading will be based on organization as well as content. The length of your paper would normally fall in the 15 to 20 page range. Papers longer than 20 pages may be penalized. (Note: Pages must be in 12 point font, double-spaced, with one inch margins all around, and each page must be numbered.)
