PHIL 2601/RELI 2738: Philosophy of Religion
Assignment #2: Comparative Analysis
For this short writing assignment you will compare two thinkers in terms of a
specific idea. The purpose of the assignment is to develop your skills in interpreting
and analyzing ideas and to help you to prepare for the essay. You will be graded on
the quality of your writing, the clarity of your explication, the strength of your
analysis, the accuracy with which you represent the ideas of each thinker, and for
following the instructions.
Leibniz argues that God is a “necessary being”1
and Aquinas argues that the being that has
“of itself its own necessity”2
is God. What is the greatest difference between their
arguments?
1. In one sentence, provide a strong statement that answers this question clearly and
succinctly.
2. Compare the most pertinent aspects of each of their arguments (with indirect
references to the texts) in order to provide reasons in support of your statement.
3. In one or two sentences state who you think has the stronger argument and briefly
explain your reasons.
Instructions:
Include a title and a word count.
Assignments are to be typed using a 12 point font and double spaced.
Do not use any direct quotations, but explain everything in your own words.
Reference the pages in the text where the ideas you describe can be found using
footnotes (a bibliography is not required for this assignment).
All references should conform to the guidelines set out in the Chicago Manual of
Style: http://www.chicagomanualofstyle.org/tools_citationguide.html
Make sure your name and student number appear at the top of the page. (Do not
include a cover page.)
Tips:
You will need to isolate the relevant sections of the text in order to begin your
analysis.
This assignment is very short, so you will need to be very succinct. The best way to
do this is to write out all of your thoughts and then organize and edit them carefully.
In other words, write more than you need to and then reduce your paper to what is
absolutely necessary.
