It was developed for treatment of severe acute malnutrition for children, which can make the difference between life and death for them. It contains peanut-based paste, sugar, vegetable fat, and skimmed milk powder, enriched with vitamins and minerals.
Plumpy’nut has a two-year shelf life and requires no water, preparation, nor does it need to be refrigerated. Traditionally, severe malnutrition has been treated with therapeutic milk and required hospitalization. Since most of the production of Plumpy’nut is in Africa, it is very accessible to the many starving children who live there. Also, the cost of this product is extremely affordable; a two month supply costs $60. Since they don’t have too much money in Africa and other developing countries, it is very practical and useful for these poor countries. Furthermore, it is very traumatic for a child to have to be admitted to a hospital, as well as costly. Since Plumpy’nut eliminates hospitalization for malnourishment, this is better for the emotional health of the child besides the physical benefits.”
