1. All three main characters–Hushpuppy, Duncan, and Pi–face conflicts. Identify the main conflict that each one faces and how he or she rises to the challenge.

2. How do the three main characters learn to define themselves?

3. All three films employ journeys which may be metaphorical as well as literal. What do the three main characters learn by the end of their respective journeys? And would you call the endings happy? Unhappy? Mixed? Some other, better term?

4. Water is featured in all three films. Consider what water is both literally and metaphorically: life-sustaining, refreshing, cleansing, fun, destructive, dangerous, deadly, etc. What is the significance of water in each film?

5. In BotSW, 6-year-old Hushpuppy’s mother is not in her life, and her father is ailing, drunk, impatient, and dying. In tWWB, teenager Duncan’s father is not present, and his mother is preoccupied with her boyfriend, whom Duncan does not like. In LoP, Pi’s parents die when he is a teenager.
Consider the impact that the loss or absence of a parent or parents can have on a child or teen. Examine this impact in regard to the three main characters.
