Mechanical engineering problem

A reverted compound gear-train is needed for a marine transmission. The gear-train has an
input of 500 hp from a diesel engine at an angular speed of 1750 rpm. The desired output
speed is 35 rpm (Assume uniform output load). Use a reliability of 99.9%. Assume other
parameters as needed (clearly state which ones you assumed).
a) Select an appropriate number of teeth for the pinion and the gears making sure
undercutting is avoided. Use tables 12-8 or 12-12 for this.
b) Pick a value of the diametral pitch and calculate pitch diameter of the pinions and
gears, pick a value of the pinion/gear face width between 8/< F < 16/, calculate
pitch line velocity in ft/min and tangential force for each of the stages of the train.
c) Select a quality number based on application or pitch line velocity.
d) Calculate bending and contact stresses for each of the stages. List any assumption
used for the calculation of the factors.
e) Pick a suitable material based on tables 12-20 and 12-21 and calculate safety factors.
If the bending or contact stresses are too high, recalculate with a lower diametral
pitch.
